The Green Direction: Batteries that give devices a second life

The consumer electronics market doesn't like stagnation. Just stop following tech news for a few months and you'll be in for quite a surprise – computers, smartphones and other devices are gaining loads of extra features and manufacturers are pushing themselves to innovate. However, this progress costs a great deal of energy – literally and figuratively.

The correlation is simple: the more complex the device, the greater the power consumption and therefore the more frequent the charging and faster the degradation of the battery cells. In this case, the user is left with two options. Either come to terms with the short life cycle of devices or try to extend it for the sake of our planet. Green Cell argues for the latter and provides access to new batteries to millions of customers.

Used doesn't mean inferior

The average lifespan of business computers is between 3 and 5 years. After this time, is the laptop only suitable for disposal? Absolutely not. In most cases, you just need to replace the battery and a few inexpensive components to give the equipment a fresh supply of power and allow it to serve the user for months or even years to come. Many people have appreciated the restored laptops especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as evidenced by the number of orders completed by Green Cell.

In 2020, the manufacturer sold 900 thousand laptop batteries. This proves that a huge number of users are still satisfied with their equipment and consider it sufficient for remote working or learning. It's worth following their footsteps, as replacing the battery in many laptop models is simple and economically as well as environmentally sensible – by just replacing the battery we save the environment from another batch of electro-waste.

Moreover, according to analysts, the trend of replacing components in laptops will continue to strengthen. According to the Transparency Market Research report, the global market of used computers will reach USD 8 billion in the next 10 years, with an annual growth of 11%. There's a reason why companies selling restored laptops are so successful – it's the direction almost the entire world is taking.

Smartphone - small but voracious

Creating an efficient power source for a smartphone is quite a challenge. Features such as high screen brightness, always-on Wi-Fi or GPS location, as well as user habits are not conducive to a long battery run on a single charge. Hardly anyone remembers that it would be best to keep the battery level between 20-80%, which minimizes cell degradation. In order to enjoy high battery performance for a long time, it's a good idea to follow this rule and not plug your smartphone into the charger overnight, as well as to disable unnecessary functions.

The manufacturers of smartphones themselves are also trying to help extend the lifetime of cells. Many of them declare the implementation of new, energy-saving solutions - e.g. processors or AMOLED displays that are distinguished by their increasingly low power consumption.

But if, despite everything, the battery has lost its capacity, there won't be a problem finding a new one - Green Cell has prepared batteries for dozens of different smartphones of the most popular brands. Last year, over 80 thousand of them were bought, which is an excellent result. Before replacing the components yourself, however, it is worth assessing your skills objectively. If you're not confident that you can handle it, it's much safer to have a professional install your smartphone battery.

Let's put alkaline batteries to rest

The situation with devices powered by the popular AA batteries is not the same as with laptops and smartphones. Here, the problem is not the frequent discharge and recharge cycles of the built-in battery, but rather the lifespan of alkaline batteries, which are still immensely popular. Disposable AA/AAA batteries are present in almost every shop and are displayed directly at the checkout, encouraging spontaneous purchases. This is a market worth $7.58 billion globally! However, if we want to save our environment, we should approach the subject with greater caution.

Instead of disposable AA/AAA batteries, it is better to choose rechargeable ones. Green Cell tests have shown that they can work extensively for 3 years, and therefore one such battery replaces several hundred traditional alkaline batteries. This is a huge relief for the planet and your wallet. It is useful to cite the figures of Green Cell again here, which supplies one million units of rechargeable batteries to the market each year. A simple calculation shows amazing results - up to half a billion disposable batteries have been saved in this way!

We can therefore conclude this text on a very positive note - more and more people are embracing the "Green Direction" in terms of battery selection and use. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this trend will continue for as long as possible.
